How to Plan the Perfect Family Camping Trip (+ Free Packing List!)

There's nothing quite like a family camping trip — fresh air, no screens, and memories that last a lifetime. But let's be honest: the packing part? That's where the stress creeps in.

That's why I created a free Family Camping Packing List printable to take the guesswork out of it. Sign up below to grab your copy! 🏕️

Start with a plan, not a panic

The secret to a stress-free camping trip is starting your prep at least a week out. Here's how I break it down:

  • 7 days before: Book your site, check gear, make your meal plan
  • 3 days before: Shop for food and supplies, print your packing list
  • Night before: Pack bags, charge devices, prep snacks for the drive
  • Morning of: Run through your checklist one final time ✅

What to pack (the categories that matter)

A good camping packing list covers five key areas:

  1. Shelter & sleeping — tent, sleeping bags, pillows, ground mat
  2. Kitchen & food — camp stove, utensils, cooler, meal plan
  3. Clothing & layers — always pack for one temperature colder than expected
  4. Kids & activities — games, bug spray, sunscreen, first aid
  5. Admin & safety — ID, campsite confirmation, emergency contacts
